Last night the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 635 points – 5.6 per cent – at 10,810 after a day of relentless selling. The index has fallen by more points on only five occasions.
In London, the FTSE-100 index ended lower for the seventh day in a row, and has now lost over 800 points, or 13.7 per cent. By contrast gold, a traditional safe haven in troubled times, hit yet another all-time high, at over $1,700 an ounce. London shares are at their lowest since July 2010, just after George Osborne's emergency Budget.

The reliability of China's railways has been called into question recently after the flagship Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail line suffered a series of power outages since it opened to great fanfare a month ago. Top two teams will be awarded Olympic slots after the single round-robin tournament
With London Olympic Games only one year to go, prospects for Chinese soccer, basketball and volleyball to earn Olympic berths remain slim.
Chinese men's Olympic soccer team has just finished their campaign as they lost to Oman 4-1 in a two-leg second round of 2012 London Olympic Asian men's soccer qualifiers.
Croatian Miroslav Blazevic, who once took the Croatian national team to win a bronze medal in 1998 World Cup, became head coach of Chinese team in last December but failed to bring a miracle to China. The team assembled five times for a total of 70 days but changed little in terms of tecniques and tactics.
Chinese women's team once won silver medals in 1996 Atlanta Olympics and 1999 Women's World Cup. However, they have been going down due to lack of young players. According to Chinese Football Association, China has only 400 registered women soccer players in sharp contrast to the world's 29 million. As a result, Chinese women's team failed to reach the quarterfinals of 2004 Athens Olympics and were even absent from the 2011 Germany's World Cup.
Now the team has finished their training in Changchun, northeast of China, where they aimed to reserve physical strength. The team played two friendly matches against Russia with one win and one draw. And then they moved to Shenyang for next training phase and will leave for Jinan about ten days before the Olympic Asian qualifiers slated from Sep 1 to 11.
According to the competition schedule, China will play successively against South Korea, DPR Korea, Thailand, Australia and Japan. Top two teams will be awarded Olympic slots after the single round-robin tournament.
Li Xiaopeng, head coach of Chinese women's team, expressed his confidence in earning an Olympic berth despite the fact that China lacks good forwards as Han Duan and Ma Xiaoxu both sustained injuries.
"We are on the same level with other teams, and we have the strength to beat them."said he.
Yu Hongchen, deputy director of China's football governing body, said:"I totally trust the coaching staff and they will bring hopes to us."

Zhong said that the acquisition will not contribute to CNOOC's net profit this year.
"It's a strategic move. Oil companies such as CNOOC can extend their industry chain by participating in oil sands and other unconventional oil," said He Wei, a senior analyst at BOCOM International Holding Co, an investment bank headquartered in Hong Kong.
CNOOC acquired a 16.69 percent stake of MEG, a Canadian oil sands company,,hair weave, for C$150 million ($158.48 million) in 2005. MEG is estimated to have more than 4 billion barrels of geological bitumen in its 52 contiguous sections in Alberta.

Marine scientists studying sharks in South Africa got closer to their subject than they expected -- when a great white jumped out of the sea and into their boat,hair weave according to reports Tuesday.
Six members of Oceans Research organization were collecting data on sharks in Mossel Bay, 241 miles west of Cape Town, when the nine-foot-eight shark leaped out of the water and landed on the boat's fuel and bait storage containers, the Cape Times reported.

Gennari said Monday's incident was the first time he'd heard of a great white jumping onto a boat, but said the fish could have mistaken the boat's shadow for prey or been disturbed by another shark.

The plan by the Gang of Six is far too complicated and contentious to advance before an Aug. 2 deadline to avoid a default that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and other experts warn would rattle markets, drive up interest rates and threaten to take the country back into a recession. But its authors clearly hope it could serve as a template for a "grand bargain" later in the year that could erase perhaps $4 trillion from the deficit over the coming decade.
In the House, the 234-190 vote Tuesday to pass the House GOP "cut, cap and balance" plan reflected the strength of tea party forces elected in last year's midterm election. Vietnamese chefs cook up a storm
A South Korean who grew up in China, Lee opened the first Phodaiz in July 2007 at The Place in Beijing with his Chinese friends Feng Chunlei, Ding Peng, and Zhang Wei. Feng and Ding both serve as deputy managers, while Zhang Wei is the senior chef.
Feng, the 26-year-old deputy manager of the Wudaokou Phodaiz, said that business at Wudaokou is better because many university students frequent the restaurant. The Place, in contrast, hosts mostly white collar workers.
"Our food is healthy and chic," Feng said. "We import all of our seasonings. The aromatic and fresh pho (a rice noodle dish) requires the highest level of technique and effort. Every restaurant has its own secret recipe for beef pho soup, which needs at least eight hours on the stew." The Phodaiz version of the tasty pho is called "all in one beef".
Hanoi spring roll is another Vietnamese speciality. "Many Vietnamese restaurants in America serve just rolls and pho," Zou said. Phodaiz's rolls have at least 10 ingredients and include do-it-yourself versions and pizza rolls.
Zhang Wei learned how to make Southeast Asian food before refining his Vietnamese cooking skills. "We learned the whole combination of Southeast Asian cuisine. There isn't a place in Beijing for chefs to learn Vietnamese food yet."

Phodaiz chefs have chances to exhibit their talents and creativity every three to six months, when managers decide to update its menu. "They invent new dishes for the managers to taste and judge," Feng said. "We just filled several long tables with new dishes on June 24."
According to Ding, the process was successful and Phodaiz will update the menu again in mid-July. "We will not only work on improving the quality of our dishes, but also our service and dining environment," he said.
